A520.3.1.RB - Decision Making Styles
Decision making can be a stressful and daunting task for some people. The task of making a decision and sticking with it when other’s object may be overwhelming or discouraging because a lack of support can a person feel they are making a bad decision. According to research, people will make decisions without thinking quite often (Decision-Making, 2009) which may have a positive outcome or possibly negative, however; it is when we are forced to make a conscience decision a struggle exists. I am no different than others and I find myself conscience and aware when I am asked to make a decision. I would consider my decision-making style to be one that is calculated because I weigh the consequences of my choices and then decide. There have been times when I could not carefully weigh my decisions and had to go with what I felt was right because not making the decision may potentially result in a greater consequence. Inc. has a few terms to help explain different types decision-making styles, I would fall under the category of a guardian because I am not one to jump up and make a decision irrationally (Sherman, 2013). I am comfortable in the safe zone by making choices weighing the options and deciding the outcome based on what may be the result including the worst case scenario.
There are many people in the world who are the complete opposite of me when it comes to decision making. They may be described as creative, free, non-calculated and catalyst because they can make a decision and go with it. In the long run, I see myself as reserved when it pertains to my decisions. I would benefit greatly by taking small steps to improve my decision-making abilities; I do not need to change who I am as a person because the world needs a balance of calculated decisions makers and flexible decision makers. It would not be beneficial to society if all people just made irrational decisions and went with it and the opposite is true for having too many people calculating the risk of a decision because problems would take too much time to resolve.
Overall, I have the knowledge and skills necessary to make a decision, whether it is calculated and safe versus quick and flexible; the most important factor is owning my decision and taking full responsibility for the outcome. Not all outcomes will result as expected, but it is important to remember why the decision was made; for the next time, adjust the situation or take a different path if necessary.
